He/Him

John Golden earned his Masters Degree in Clinical Counseling Psychology from LaSalle University. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor, as well as a Neurofeedback provider. John has extensive experience treating people struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss, and relationship difficulties, and he specializes in the treatment of substance use issues.
John brings great warmth and compassion into treatment, as well as an eclectic mix of therapeutic approaches, including psychodynamic, person-centered, ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), and mindfulness. His aim is to create a safe place for his clients to learn and grow and heal.
When working with clients struggling with substance use issues, John takes an integrated harm-reduction approach. This means clients are met wherever they are at with kindness, compassion, and respect—whether they have decided to make a change and are ready to start, or they want to make a change but aren’t sure if they’re ready, or if they’re undecided if they want to make a change and just need some space to figure that out. Clients are empowered to set their own goals for themselves, and supported as they work towards those goals at their own pace and comfort level. People use drugs for a reason, and even though drug use frequently ends up being a problem, it almost always starts as a solution to some other problem. Whatever that underlying problem is—be it depression, anxiety, difficulty connecting with others, feeling uncomfortable in social settings or in one’s own skin—John can help clients to learn healthier ways of coping.
John also works with concerned family members and friends, utilizing the CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) model. This cutting-edge approach teaches specific skills and strategies to help their loved ones while avoiding detachment and confrontation. Research has demonstrated that CRAFT is significantly more effective in engaging loved ones in treatment and decreasing their substance use than traditional interventions.

Getting to Know John

Hey, thanks for stopping by my little corner of the Bucks Support Services website! Sitting with folks and being trusted with their innermost thoughts and feelings is something that I feel incredibly honored and grateful to be able to do. Outside the therapy room there’s a good chance you might find me with a book in my lap or standing over the stove. Before becoming a counselor I worked for a time as both as an English teacher and a cook (alongside some other interesting gigs) and reading and cooking continue to be passions of mine.
I love stories (whether reading them, watching them, or hearing them from a dear friend or a stranger on a park bench). One of my favorite parts of being a counselor is helping folks make sense of their own stories; how where they’ve been and what they’ve been through has led them to where they are and what they’re currently experiencing, and how re-writing that story can change the direction of their lives.
My other great loves are gardening and music. In my next life I am definitely planning on coming back with some serious musical talent. In this life, alas, not so much. I am an enthusiastic and devoted fan and can get equally excited about listening to a favorite album on headphones, cranking a cherished and carefully curated playlist while out for a drive, or seeing a favorite band playing live.
My partner and I enjoy traveling, hiking, entertaining friends, and hanging out with our two cats that we rescued as seniors—our beloved Golden Girls: Millie and Meena.
